Chardham Pilgrimage Yatra

The journey to these four sacred sites is known as the Char Dham Yatra in Hinduism. This yatra was established by the great philosopher Shri Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century A.D.

• Yamunotri and Gangotri, both located in Uttarkashi district, are dedicated to Goddesses Yamuna and Ganga respectively.
• Kedarnath, located in Rudraprayag, is believed to be a form of Lord Shiva and is home to one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. Several ancient temples are also located near the Mandakini River.
• Badrinath, associated with Lord Vishnu, is the fourth dham. It is believed that Lord Nar-Narayan (incarnation of Vishnu) meditated here during the Satyayuga. The region was once filled with berry trees (called Badri in Sanskrit), which gave the place its name — Badrinath. The temple houses many statues and images of Lord Vishnu’s avatars.
